Springmaid Hosted Myrtle Beach’s Polar Plunge to Benefit Special Olympics
for the Fourth Year in a Row
February, 2010, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Springmaid Beach Resort and Conference Center sponsored Myrtle Beach’s Polar Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics South Carolina on January 30, 2010. This marks the fourth year that Springmaid Beach Resort has hosted the event, which this year raised $76,000, providing the use of their grounds, beachfront, conference space, rooms and some donated food items.
With hundreds of participants jumping into the chilly January waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the event raised $16,000 more in donations than last year. Notes Jon Konkel, General Manager for Springmaid, “It’s an amazing sight to see and all for a great cause. We are happy to be a part of this successful effort once again.”
Participating local businesses and schools encourage their students and employees to become involved; and this year, many of those who “took the plunge” were from these organizations. Carolina Forest High School finished the event with bragging rights for the most money raised this year.
A few brave Springmaid Beach Resort staff even participated in the Plunge itself. “It’s always fun to help out, though definitely more chilly this year,” said Maureen Cockrill, Director of Revenue for the Resort.
This spacious 27-acre resort, located on the south end of the Grand Strand, is known for being a great value on the beach. Springmaid offers competitive golf, theater, spring break and other packages. While at Springmaid, guests enjoy the resort’s many amenities including six pools, two lazy rivers, the oceanfront Pier Café, Marlin’s Buffet, miniature golf, game room, fitness center and the famous Springmaid Pier.
